Are you concerned after hearing strange noises from your coffee maker after brewing a fresh cup

You see:

While not quiet, your Keurig coffee maker isn’t meant to be overly noisy. A user tends to grow accustomed to the usual coffee maker sounds after using Keurig for some time.

However:

Your Keurig coffee maker can start acting up and making weird sounds suddenly.

So:

Do you want to know what these weird noises could mean for your Keurig coffee maker?

Well:

Below are some possible reasons behind the strange sounds you are hearing.

Keurig Making Weird Noise

Do the strange sounds from your coffee maker leave you feeling anxious while brewing? How can you troubleshoot your coffee maker? Try the following. Make sure your coffee maker is seated on an even surface, try changing it if you have used it for years, or check if there are any loose parts you can tighten.

1. The Surface Your Coffee Maker Is Sitting On

Most Keurig coffee makers are quiet for the most part.

However:

They do vibrate gently during a brewing cycle. But this is mostly harmless, depending on where your coffee machine sits.

Now:

Hard surfaces can amplify the vibrations coming from your Keurig coffee maker while it is brewing.

As such:

It is important to take note of where you set it down. Feel free to place a neatly folded towel under the machine before you start brewing.

Also:

Consider purchasing a small coffee pod drawer. It provides a space for you to sort your coffee pods and a perfect surface for your Keurig coffee maker

Thankfully:

These drawers come in different shapes and sizes. You are bound to find the perfect one for your kitchen.

2. Coffee Maker Decompressing

Imagine hearing owl noises only to spot your coffee maker sitting in the darkness. You may be wondering why your Keurig is making noise when off.

Well:

While your coffee maker operates with water, air can sometimes find its way into the machine. This can be problematic, as pressure build-up could damage your coffee maker

Fortunately:

Some Keurig models decompress themselves while inactive. This often happens when your coffee maker is turned off and may sound like an owl

Well:

You have nothing to worry about, as this is a normal occurrence. The owl-like sounds should stop once your coffee maker is done decompressing

3. Clogged Water Pipes

Keurig Clogged Water Pipes

Your Keurig brews coffee by following a step-by-step process. It’s possible that your Keurig only starts making noise when drawing water from the reservoir

If so:

It may be time to descale your Keurig. Your Keurig will have difficulty drawing in water if the pipes are clogged. A clog could also be why your Keurig is making noise but not brewing.

Thankfully:

You can easily descale your coffee maker by following the steps below.

  • Step 1: Unplug your coffee maker.
  • Step 2: Remove your water reservoir and set it to the side.
  • Step 3: Mix equal parts water and your descaling solution of choice.
  • Step 4: Fill the reservoir and reinsert it.
  • Step 5: Start a brewing cycle and wait until the coffee machine starts dripping. If you notice any unusual dripping after brewing, refer to our detailed guide for insights and solutions..
  • Step 6: Stop the cycle and let your Keurig coffee maker sit for ten to twenty minutes.
  • Step 7: Finish the brewing cycle and refill the reservoir with clean filtered water.
  • Step 8: Brew the filtered water repeatedly until all the descaling solution washes.

Your coffee maker should work noise-free after descaling it.

4. Ownership Duration

Keurig Ownership Duration

Keurig coffee makers are not made to last forever. As much as we would like to hang on, a coffee maker eventually must be replaced

You see:

Like all technology, a Keurig coffee maker eventually gets to a point where it struggles to operate. This can include running with some unusual sounds

Consequently:

If your Keurig is making strange noises, it may be time to replace it.

5. Faulty Water Pump

Keurig Faulty Water Pump

The water pump is responsible for moving fluids within your coffee maker. It is a key part of the brewing process and ensures water gets from the reservoir to the internal tank.

Sadly:

A faulty motor pump could make some unsettling noises. As such, if you isolate the sound to your motor pump, you need to get a new one.

Fortunately:

You can fish for new parts through Keurig customer service or third-party sites.

6. A Part Is Loose in Your Coffee Maker

Your coffee maker harmlessly vibrates during use.

Now:

While this may not cause immediate problems, your coffee maker may be on its last legs

You see:

Parts loosen over time as the machine vibrates. Occasionally, you can fix them back together. But some are damaged without repair.

As such:

If your Keurig keeps making noise, you may have some loose parts that need repair. To this end, you should probably contact Keurig customer service or a licensed technician.

7. Clogged Exit Needle

Keurig Needle

Your Keurig can go through the full brewing process and stop right when it is meant to dispense

Now:

This problem is often associated with your Keurig making a clicky sound

Well:

A plugged exit needle likely caused this. It may have coffee grounds stuck in it

To clear this issue:

Get a paperclip and gently prod around the exit valve in the needle. This should loosen any stuck coffee grounds and allow your machine to brew normally.

8. Prime Your Keurig’s Pump

Your Keurig coffee maker cannot pump water if there is air in the machine.

Now:

You may be wondering how the air got in. The intake pumps water from the reservoir and may also take in a few air bubbles

Unfortunately:

This is especially bad if your start the brewing process without filling your water reservoir to the appropriate level.

Ultimately:

Your Keurig is making grinding noises and not dispensing due to this problem.

Fortunately:

You can prime your machine by unplugging it and shaking out some of the air within it.

Also, newer models decompress automatically when idle. This solves the problem of having to prime your favorite coffee maker manually.

Conclusion

The only sound you ought to hear is the gentle hum of your Keurig working to produce that magical cup of coffee. Consequently, any extra sounds can ruin the atmosphere.

But:

Here are some reasons your coffee maker may be making strange sounds.

  • Not properly seated on a sound-dampened surface
  • Coffee Maker is Decompressing
  • The water pipes are clogged
  • The machine is old
  • The water pump is faulty
  • A part is loose in the coffee maker
  • The exit needle is blocked
  • The pump isn’t primed

If the sounds coming from your machine have nothing to do with the above-listed problems, you can contact Keurig customer service for further advice.

  1. After the coffee cup is filled, there is ALWAYS a brief,
3-second grinding noise. Is that the sound of the pump sending more water to the tank, or vice versa?

I think this is normal, yet still mysterious to all of us. Can someone clarify?

    • Hi Donald. The brief, 3-second grinding noise you hear after your Keurig fills a coffee cup is typically normal and part of the machine’s operation. It’s likely the sound of the pump moving water back to the heating chamber or the machine releasing pressure built up during the brewing process. Such sounds are common in coffee machines, especially those designed for quick brewing. Erica.

  2. I received a K-Slim for Christmas and I love it. It dispenses coffee quietly, however it makes noise during the heating process. Is this normal?

  3. To amend my previous comment, my machine is a K-Slim Mini and it makes noise while warming the water and then is quiet when dispensing the coffee. Is this normal?

    • With the K-Slim Mini, it’s pretty standard for the machine to make noise while it’s heating up the water. This sound is usually the water being drawn into the heating chamber and getting ready to brew your coffee.

  4. My new Keurig coffee maker periodically (every 10-15 minutes) makes a grinding noise. It only lasts about 4-5 seconds and sounds like the same noise as when I first turn it on. Is that normal?

  5. My Keurig will sometimes make a loud “pop” and shut itself off just upon dispensing. It’s only 2 years old but I’ve never had that happen until the recently… maybe a month or two.
